Jakarta –  Governor of Central Kalimantan, Teras Nanang claimed, palm oil plantations in the region will not harm the productive agriculture areas. He ensured, all the planted regions have been officially legalized by the Ministry of Forestry.

“Most of the planted regions are in the forest areas,” Teras said in Dharmawangsa Hotel, South Jakarta, Tuesday, August 26, 2014. As quoted from Tempo, Teras was in Jakarta for having meeting with some organizations relating to run sustainable palm oil plantation development.

Teras said, 67% of the palm oil plantations in Central Kalimantan are planted in the forest regions. The rests, 33% are planted in non forest regions. But he quaranteed, the protected forest, conservation forests, production forests, and the agriculture areas will not be harmed by the palm oil plantations.

Data from Plantation Agency noted, palm oil plantations in Central Kalimantan reach 1.067.000 hectares. They are cultivated by 96 palm oil companies. In details, 87 companies run their operations, and the rests are in the waiting list to have the licences. Beside that, there are about 1,6 millions of hectares which are potential to be developed. “We target that the area could be enlarged to plant palm oil,” Teras mentioned. (T2)
