InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Used cooking oil (UCO) derived from palm oil, often considered mere household waste, is now being transformed into a high-value commodity. PT Pertamina (Persero) has successfully developed Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from UCO, a breakthrough that supports emission reduction in the aviation industry while opening new economic opportunities for the community.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, explained that the launch of SAF will drive the formation of a circular economy. The public can actively participate as raw material suppliers, allowing waste cooking oil to be processed into environmentally friendly fuel.

“The Pertamina SAF ecosystem will drive a circular economy in the community. Through the UCollect program, people can collect household used cooking oil and exchange it at the collection points we have provided,” Fadjar said in an official statement received by InfoSAWIT on Monday (25/8/2025).

Pertamina has placed 35 UCollect Boxes in strategic locations, including gas stations, Pertamina IHC hospitals, and public service centers across Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, and Palembang. In addition to involving households, Pertamina is forging partnerships with the commercial sector, such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes, to expand the UCO supply chain. This collaboration is expected to sustainably boost SAF production. According to Fadjar, the use of SAF has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 84 percent compared to conventional aviation fuel, aligning with the national energy transition target toward Net Zero Emission 2060.

“Going forward, SAF production capacity will continue to be increased. With public support, the clean energy ecosystem can develop more rapidly, and the benefits can be shared by all,” he concluded. (T2)
