East Kalimantan Promotes Utilization of Palm Oil Waste for Clean Energy

InfoSAWIT, SAMARINDA -  The East Kalimantan Provincial Government continues to encourage businesses to harness renewable energy potential in their environments, including in the palm oil sector, which has biomass and biogas resources.

"Palm oil plantations have significant potential from their waste, both solid and liquid, which can be processed into clean energy sources," said Syamsuddin, New Renewable Energy Policy Analyst at the East Kalimantan Energy and Mineral Resources Office, as reported by InfoSAWIT from Antara on August 11, 2025.

He explained that solid waste in the form of palm shells can be processed into biomass for power generation, replacing coal. Currently, its utilization is still limited to internal electricity needs of the companies.

Another potential source comes from palm oil mill effluent (POME), which produces methane gas. If captured, this gas can be utilized as biogas. "Utilizing POME provides dual benefits: reducing greenhouse gas emissions while generating energy," he added.

Syamsuddin cited the success of PT Dharma Satya Nusantara (DSN) in Muara Wahau, Kutai Timur, which has processed POME into biogas for operational vehicles. "During our visit in 2023, about 75% of their vehicles were already using biogas, saving up to IDR 7 billion per year compared to diesel usage," he revealed.

In line with the provincial government's efforts, the Kutai Timur Regency Government is also preparing to utilize renewable energy from palm oil waste for community electricity supply. Arif Nur Wahyuni, Head of Natural Resources at the Kutai Timur Regency Government, stated that they are facilitating cooperation between PLN and palm oil companies to electrify 22 out of 141 villages that are yet to receive electricity services.

"The hidden energy potential in palm oil liquid waste can not only generate electricity but also support the national energy transition agenda. This is the future of green energy," Arif concluded. (T2)
