Indonesia's Quarantine Agency Certifies 8.6 Million Tons of Palm Exports, Partners with SawitNus to Strengthen Young Talent

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Indonesia's Quarantine Agency (Barantin) is exploring collaboration with the Central Executive Board of the Young Reform Movement for the Indonesian Palm Oil Sector (SawitNus) to strengthen youth capacity and support the sustainable development of the country's palm oil and coconut industries.

According to information obtained by InfoSAWIT from Barantin on Monday (July 13, 2026), the initiative emerged during a meeting in Jakarta between Hudiansyah Is Nursal, Head of Barantin's Bureau of Legal Affairs and Public Relations, and representatives of SawitNus.

Hudiansyah emphasized that Barantin plays a strategic role not only in protecting Indonesia's biological resources and ensuring food and feed safety, but also as an important trade facilitator supporting the country's export performance.

"In addition to safeguarding biological resources, we enforce quarantine regulations and serve as an economic instrument to ensure Indonesian export commodities are well accepted in destination markets," he said.

Barantin's performance in the palm oil sector showed positive growth during the first half of 2026. Data from the BEST TRUST system indicate that export certification for palm oil and its derivative products reached 8.6 million metric tons between January and June 2026, representing an estimated economic value of approximately Rp38.5 trillion.

Certified export products were dominated by palm kernel shells, palm kernel expeller (PKE), RBD Palm Olein, crude palm oil (CPO), and RBD Palm Stearin, with major destinations including Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Poland, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Meanwhile, SawitNus Chairman Ujang welcomed Barantin's openness to collaborating with youth organizations involved in the development of Indonesia's coconut and palm oil industries.

He expressed hope that the partnership would be realized through educational initiatives and capacity-building programs to equip young people with greater knowledge of sustainable palm oil development.

"We hope to establish synergy with Barantin through joint educational platforms aimed at strengthening the capacity of young people in the coconut and palm oil sectors," Ujang said.

Barantin is also continuing to improve quarantine services by digitalizing documentation and integrating service systems to accelerate export certification while maintaining compliance with international standards required by importing countries.

Beyond certification, the agency regularly provides technical assistance to businesses, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) producing value-added palm oil products. The guidance focuses on helping exporters meet quarantine requirements and international regulatory standards.

Hudiansyah added that downstream development remains a key strategy to increase the value of Indonesia's agricultural commodities while improving community welfare.

"To ensure sustainability and improve livelihoods, downstream development of Indonesia's commodities, including coconut and palm oil, must continue to be promoted," he concluded.

The meeting was also attended by Ichwandi, Head of Barantin's Data and Information Systems Center, and Andi Yusmanto, representing the Deputy for Plant Quarantine. The collaboration is expected to strengthen Indonesia's palm oil ecosystem, from human capital development to enhancing the global competitiveness of the country's palm-based products. (T2)
