TOBA SAMOSIR – A pulp producer company, PT. Toba Pulp Lestari, Tbk, has had as many as two units of steam turbines capable of generating 73 MW of electricity, which is kind of MHI turbine electricity-producing turbines with a capacity of 53 MWh, as well as the type of SGP turbines with a capacity of 20MWh of electricity generating power.
The turbine engines that produce electricity are working with fumes energy coming from two boiler units of machines, namely Multi Fuel Boiler with a capacity of 180 tons / hour of steam, and Recovery Boiler having a capacity of 165 tons / hour.
Power Site Section Head of Toba Pulp, Gortap Silaban, said the boilers owned by Toba Pulp, are the power plant with steam power, it work principle are heating water to a pressure of approximately 65 kg/cm2 and temperature of 450 Celsius degrees, and then supplied to a steam turbine to produce electricity and steam extraction for heating needs, cooking wood (in digester process) and others.
“The electric power generated by the turbine engine is 98,72% used to run the machines in the factory while the rest is used as power supply for the housing of factory’s complex. Thus the company is no longer dependent on the country’s electricity supply, even to relieve the burden of electricity needs of the complex of employee housing,” he said, as published by Sumut Online, on Thursday (06/11/2014).
He continued to explain, multi-fuel engine boilers are the meaningful machines capable of working with different types of raw materials such are bark, palm oil fiber, palm oil shell, and charcoal shell (waste from Palm Oil Mill’s boiler which is the boiler combustion less than perfect), and also empty fruit bunches.
