Jakarta – The vaster growth of palm oil industries in Indonesia urges wider enlargement. For the mineral area is limited, it is suspected that palm oil enlargement has been done in peatland area.
Wetlands International said, there are about 21 millions hectares peatland area in Indonesia and about 7 millions hectares or 30% of the area have been planted for the mining industries, agriculture and palm oil.
According to Director Wetlands International, Indonesia, I Nyoman N Suryadiputra, the agricultural development and palm oil plantation in the peatland area need best calculation and consideration for the cost production is more expensive than in mineral areas and the flame in peatland is too. “It needs deep consideration to plant palm oil in peatland area,” Nyoman said to InfoSAWIT in Jakarta, Thursday, (26/6/2014).
The regulation still posibly regulates to do it but Nyoman said, it should be careful to plant something in the peatland. “Sago could be the alternative beside palm oil,” Nyoman ended his words. (T2)
