Independent Farmers Groups Get More RSPO

JAKARTA – In 2014, there are more independent farmers groups in Indonesia getting the international certification, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). It is known that Farmers Group of TanjungSehatiin Jambi and the Cooperation TaniMajuwhich is guided by Cargill in South Sumatera.

In 2013, the farmers group in subdistrict of Akui, District ofPalalawan, Riau, which was in the Independent Farmers Group Association, Amanah had got the certification from the non profit organization.

Director of RSPO Indonesia, DesiKusumadewi said, the certified area of Amanah Association reached 746 hectareswhile Farmers Group  ofTanjungSehatiand Cooperation of TaniMajureached 346 hectares and 90 hectares for each. In June 2014, the smallholder scheme which got certification were Indonesia 39.456 hectares (40%), Papua New Guinea 34.003 hectares (34%), Malaysia 13.798 hectares (14%), Ivory Coast 10.117 hectares (10%), Colombia 1.464 hectares (1%), dan Solomon Island (1.011 hectares (1%). But Desi could not be sure about the target of farmers groups having the RSPO certification. “The palm oil farmers unions have proposed it but there is no certain time when to be audited,” she recently said.(T3)
