InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto affirmed his commitment to eradicating illegal practices that harm the state. In his first year of leadership, the government successfully dismantled 1,000 illegal mines and took action against 5 million hectares of illegal palm oil plantations across various regions in Indonesia.
Prabowo conveyed this during a dialogue "A Meeting of Minds" with Forbes Media Chairman, Steve Forbes, at the Forbes Global CEO Conference 2025 held at the St. Regis Jakarta on Wednesday (15/10/2025).
"I went to two islands in Indonesia, Bangka and Belitung. We received reports that there were about 1,000 illegal tin mines on those two islands. As a result, the state was losing about 80 percent of the total national tin production due to illegal practices and smuggling," Prabowo told global business leaders.
State Reclaims Millions of Hectares of Illegal Palm Oil Land
In addition to mining, Prabowo highlighted the misuse of permits in the plantation sector. He revealed that the state has reclaimed millions of hectares of palm oil land proven to be operating illegally.
"A report came to me, saying that out of millions of hectares of palm oil plantations, about 5,000 hectares were operating illegally. I asked, only 5,000 hectares? No, it turned out to be 5 million hectares! And all of that had no legitimate legal basis," he explained, as reported by InfoSAWIT from Sindonews on Thursday (16/10/2025).
Prabowo added that the government has recovered about 3.7 million hectares of the total illegal palm oil land through legal processes. "I said, I was sworn in to uphold the law. So I ordered the Attorney General and the State Audit Agency (BPK) to conduct an investigation. If found to be in violation, stop the concession. And that is what we did," he asserted. (T2)
