Palm Oil Plantations Need 7 Millions of Workers

JAKARTA – Indonesia is famously known as the biggest palm oil producer whole over the world. It needs qualified human resources about 7 millions to work there.

“Per hectare, the worker in palm oil will be o,4 people or family. So if  Indonesia has 10 million hectares, it means that it needs 4 million families to work directly. The families directly work in palm oil plantation. While the indirect workers will be 0,3 man. So it is about 7 – 8 millions people,” Executive Director of Indonesian Vegetable Oil Industry Association, Sahat Sinaga said, Wednesday (21/3).

He continued, the workers are just in the plantations only. The numbers are not in the downstream sectors. In the downstream, Sahat emphasized, the company should have dedicated employees as well as the upstream sector. For such a long time, he knew, one obstacle postponing palm oil industries is the employee who has no good knowledge about palm oil. “They do not have education fully (special training/education); they just learn by doing,” he said.

On the other hand, Central Statistic Agency, in December 2014, palm oil plantation needed Rp 9,7 millions per hectare per year within the production reached Rp 17 millions per hectare per year within the ratio 57.05%.(T3)
