InfoSAWIT, MEDAN – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that global warming is intensifying extreme weather events in Sumatra.

BMKG Deputy for Climatology Dr. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan explained that flash floods and landslides in late 2025 were triggered by rising global temperatures and tropical cyclones near Sumatra.

Satellite data showed Cyclone Senyar in November 2025 brought rainfall as high as 1,356 mm—nearly three times normal levels.

“Extreme rainfall events exceeding 250 mm per day, previously occurring once in 100 years, could now recur within less than 20 years,” he said.

He noted that 2025 ranked as the third warmest year on record globally. (T2)
