Referring to an article by Hajar Shamsudin of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Saturday (3/1/2026), the global candle market reached US$8.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to continue growing in line with shifting consumer preferences worldwide.

Candles are no longer merely a source of lighting, but have become an integral part of modern lifestyles—closely associated with home décor, aromatherapy, celebrations, and personal care. This functional transformation opens substantial opportunities for natural and sustainable raw materials, where palm oil—particularly from Malaysia—holds a strong competitive advantage.

 

Large Market, Growing Demand

North America currently represents the world’s largest candle market, accounting for around 40% of global demand, followed by Europe at approximately 30%. In both regions, demand for eco-friendly and premium candles has grown rapidly, especially in Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. Average candle consumption in the European Union even reaches 1.69 kilograms per capita per year, reflecting a mature yet still expanding market.

Asia, meanwhile, is considered the fastest-growing region. Rising incomes in China, India, and Japan, combined with urbanisation and lifestyle changes, are driving strong demand for home ambience and wellness products, including scented candles.

The combination of mature Western markets and rapid growth in Asia positions candles as a segment with strong long-term potential—particularly for producers of plant-based candle raw materials.

 

Palm Oil as a Competitive Key Ingredient

Palm oil plays a strategic role in the global candle industry. Its derivatives—such as palm stearin, palm kernel stearin, stearic acid, and glycerine—offer superior technical characteristics, including high melting points, strong structure, stable combustion, and good resistance in hot climates.

These advantages make palm-based candles suitable for a wide range of segments, from decorative and pillar candles to premium aromatherapy products. Compared with petroleum-based paraffin candles, palm-based candles produce less soot, burn longer, and are safer for indoor use.

From a cost perspective, palm oil also provides competitive production efficiency, enabling manufacturers to deliver high-quality candles at affordable prices—an important factor for both mass-market and premium segments.

 

Sustainability Momentum Adds Value

Market opportunities for palm-based candles are strengthening further as consumer awareness of environmental issues increases. Demand for candles made from natural materials such as palm oil, soy, and beeswax continues to rise in line with green consumption trends.

In this context, palm oil benefits from additional advantages through MSPO sustainability certification. This certification ensures traceability, environmental management, and responsible labour practices—critical factors for European and North American markets.

With sustainability assurances in place, palm-based candles can be positioned as environmentally friendly products without compromising technical performance or aesthetics.

Whether acknowledged or not, the global candle market offers significant downstream opportunities for palm oil. Rather than exporting only crude oil or semi-finished products, the industry can promote the development of high–value-added derivatives, such as specialty waxes for premium and aromatherapy candles.

Luxury and artisan candle segments—often inspired by high-end perfumes—represent niche markets with high margins. The involvement of global perfume and lifestyle brands in candle product lines suggests that this market is far from saturated. (T2)
