BMJ Cooperative Strengthens Institutional Capacity to Empower Independent Smallholders

InfoSAWIT, SIMALUNGUN – The Bersatu Makmur Jaya (BMJ) Consumer Cooperative in Simalungun, North Sumatra, is intensifying efforts to strengthen its institutional capacity to enhance benefits for independent oil palm smallholders.

Quote InfoSAWIT from FORTASBI, on Tuesday (21 April 2026), the cooperative has implemented various capacity-building programs, including financial management training and financial literacy for its members.

BMJ Chairman Ardiansyah Sinto Sirait stated that strengthening institutional capacity is essential for ensuring the cooperative delivers tangible benefits to its members.

He emphasized that collaboration with corporate partners plays a vital role in advancing sustainable smallholder plantations.

The cooperative has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Unilever Oleochemical Indonesia to support ongoing training programs tailored to evolving industry challenges.

Currently, BMJ supports 1,277 independent smallholders—comprising 955 men and 322 women—managing a total plantation area of 2,270.79 hectares.

In addition to institutional strengthening, BMJ is developing community empowerment programs, including home gardening initiatives aimed at supporting women following RSPO certification.

A newly established unit, Sepakat Mekar Bersama, serves as a platform for women to share knowledge on agriculture, health, and nutrition.

These initiatives are expected to strengthen smallholder participation in global supply chains while improving long-term welfare. (T2)
