Community Focal Points Key to Tackling Child Labor in Sabah Plantations

InfoSAWIT, SABAH – Community-based focal points are considered a crucial element in addressing child labor in palm oil plantations, particularly in Sabah, Malaysia, where many migrant workers live with their families.

Quoting InfoSAWIT from webinar session, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Aiza Sunarto from The Centre for Child Rights and Business explained that community-based approaches enable faster and more effective identification and handling of cases.

She noted that her background as part of the migrant worker community builds trust, making it easier for families to report issues such as children dropping out of school or entering labor.

“I was born and raised in Sabah in a migrant family, so I understand the challenges firsthand. This closeness builds trust,” she said.

In practice, Aiza acts as a bridge between communities and the Action Hub, receiving reports from teachers and families regarding children at risk.

Each case is assessed and followed by tailored support, including education access, financial assistance, skills training, and family livelihood support.

She stressed the need to expand the number of community focal points to reach more cases effectively.

“With the Action Hub, I now know how to report and handle cases in a structured way,” she concluded. (T2)
