PTPN IV PalmCo Ready to Pilot Superior Oil Palm Pollinating Insects

InfoSAWIT, SIMALUNGUN – PTPN IV PalmCo has expressed full readiness to serve as the initial implementation site for the introduction of three superior pollinating insect species from Tanzania, East Africa, aimed at boosting Indonesia’s palm oil productivity.

According to InfoSAWIT, citing an official statement on April 9, 2026, the company will also act as a field learning center and monitoring location following the release of the pollinators.

PTPN IV PalmCo’s President Director, represented by Operations Director Rediman Silalahi, emphasized the company’s commitment.

“We are ready to make our plantation the initial implementation site, as well as a field learning and evaluation center,” he said during the insect release event at the Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (PPKS) Marihat Unit.

He explained that successful pollination is crucial for fruit set and directly impacts production. However, natural pollination is not always optimal, often requiring costly manual intervention.

The introduction of superior pollinators is expected to improve efficiency and reduce reliance on artificial pollination.

“We understand this process has undergone rigorous research, testing, and quarantine, ensuring it is carried out carefully and responsibly,” he added.

Strategic, Research-Based Innovation

PalmCo views the program as a strategic, research-driven solution to real field challenges, strengthening production stability and operational efficiency.

The initiative involves collaboration between multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture, BPDP, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, PT Riset Perkebunan Nusantara, GAPKI member companies, the Entomological Society of Indonesia (PEI), and PIPPSI.

As host, PalmCo will turn its plantation into a “field laboratory” for ongoing testing and practical learning.

This initiative, starting at Marihat Plantation, is expected to become a milestone in increasing national palm oil productivity and be replicated across Indonesia.

“We believe that through strong synergy, continuous innovation, and shared commitment, Indonesia’s palm oil industry will become more resilient and contribute significantly to national development,” Rediman concluded. (T2)
