InfoSAWIT, BOGOR – IPB University has introduced an innovative electrochemical technology, known as EC+, to improve the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) and support sustainability in the palm oil industry.
Developed by Prof. Suprihatin from the Department of Agro-Industrial Technology, the innovation addresses environmental challenges linked to the rapid growth of palm oil mills.
Each tonne of fresh fruit bunches processed generates approximately 0.75–0.90 cubic meters of wastewater, equivalent to around 3.33 cubic meters per tonne of CPO.
“Conventional anaerobic–aerobic pond systems still have limitations in terms of effectiveness and efficiency,” said Prof. Suprihatin.
The EC+ process uses electrocoagulation to remove pollutants such as TSS, COD, BOD, oil, and nutrients.
“The process is effective in producing cleaner water suitable for reuse,” she explained.
The technology can reduce treatment costs by up to 50% and supports circular economy practices by enabling water reuse and converting sludge into organic fertiliser. (T2)
