InfoSAWIT, PORT MORESBY – The Oil Palm Industry Corporation (OPIC) Board of Papua New Guinea has expressed support for the government’s plan to introduce new palm oil management legislation to parliament.
OPIC Board Chairman Augustine Kapi said the proposed laws are crucial to improving the welfare of oil palm smallholders, who have not fully benefited from the industry.
“We smallholders have not enjoyed the benefits of the palm oil industry over the past 50 years. These bills are important as they will transform farmers’ lives,” Kapi stated.
The proposed legislation includes the Palm Oil Management Bill and the Palm Oil Authority Bill.
Kapi emphasized that OPIC remains committed to representing smallholders’ interests despite opposition from a small group.
“Those opposing the bills are a minority and do not represent all farmers,” he said.
He also called for constructive dialogue among stakeholders to strengthen the sector and ensure fairer benefit distribution. (T2)
