InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Agriculture has called for stronger and more constructive narratives surrounding Indonesia’s palm oil industry, emphasizing its strategic role in national economic development.
Director of Plantation Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, Hendratmojo Bagus Hudoro, delivered the message during a Good Palm Oil Campaign Discussion with Media, attended by InfoSAWIT on Monday (2/3/2026).
According to Hendratmojo, negative narratives targeting the palm oil sector should be addressed strategically rather than emotionally. He argued that global criticism and pressure indicate the commodity’s strong strategic value in international markets.
“If there are attacks or criticism, it means our palm oil is being taken seriously. We should not be provoked into internal conflicts, but instead strengthen our unity and reinforce our foundation,” he said.
Building a Positive Aura and Strong Foundation
Hendratmojo encouraged all stakeholders, including the media, to highlight improvements and sustainability efforts already implemented within the palm oil sector.
He stressed that allegations such as environmental destruction or ecological negligence must be addressed through data transparency, better governance, and sustainable practices.
“We are building a strong foundation. If the foundation is solid, the industry will not easily be shaken,” he said.
He also warned that palm oil is not the only commodity facing global scrutiny. Other commodities such as coffee, cocoa, pepper, and nutmeg could face similar pressures if Indonesia does not strengthen its systems early.
Presidential Mandate on Strategic Commodities
Hendratmojo revealed that the President has mandated the strengthening of seven national strategic commodities, including palm oil, through a more measurable governance and indicator-based approach.
Palm oil contributes significantly to Indonesia’s economy through exports, job creation, and regional economic development. With proper development grounded in sustainability principles, Indonesia could strengthen its position as a globally competitive agrarian nation.
“If growth is encouraged with the right development concept, it is not impossible for Indonesia to become an agrarian superpower. Our country is blessed with abundant resources,” he said.
Strengthening Regulation and Diplomacy
He emphasized that regulatory strengthening is crucial to enhancing the credibility of Indonesia’s palm oil industry globally.
The government continues improving the legal framework and encouraging sustainable business practices aligned with global standards without compromising national interests.
Diplomatic efforts are also ongoing whenever foreign policies or interventions are considered harmful to Indonesia’s palm oil sector.
“We have principles and regulations. We should not lose our identity due to external pressure. Instead, we must demonstrate that Indonesia can manage palm oil responsibly,” he said.
Hendratmojo also urged the media to present balanced reporting by highlighting both challenges and achievements in the sector.
“Let us tell constructive and positive stories. Together we can build a strong foundation so that this industry continues to benefit the nation,” he concluded. (T2)
