InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA — From Forum Batik Laweyan to Spa Factory and BOEMI Botanicals, Indonesian creative enterprises are demonstrating that certification and sustainability can open doors to global markets.
In the heart of Kampoeng Batik Laweyan, Solo, the centuries-old tradition of batik-making continues to thrive alongside modern challenges. Since 2009, the area has operated a communal wastewater treatment facility (IPAL), reflecting the community’s concrete commitment to preventing batik waste from polluting waterways.
“Batik is a heritage that spans hundreds of years. We want it to endure—not to damage the earth,” said Alpha Febela Priyatmono, Chair of the Laweyan Batik Village Development Forum (FPKBL), speaking at the Craft Talks event attended by InfoSAWIT in early October 2025.
For him, Laweyan’s environmental efforts are a collective aspiration, now reinforced by sustainability certifications such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). “With these standards, we hope Laweyan batik will be known not only for its motifs, but also for its environmental responsibility,” he added.
The journey toward sustainability has also connected the batik industry with other sectors, including beauty and skincare. Spa Factory, a supplier of raw materials for various cosmetic brands, began seriously integrating sustainability into its operations in 2019, driven by increasingly discerning global consumers.
“At first, clients simply asked for clarification about raw materials. Over time, they began demanding certainty. That’s when we decided to pursue RSPO certification,” said Vialita Rahmani, Product Development Coordinator at Spa Factory. According to her, sustainability is no longer a buzzword, but a prerequisite for accessing premium global markets.
Meanwhile in Bali, another sustainability story is unfolding. BOEMI Botanicals, a natural skincare start-up, carries a similar spirit. Using locally sourced Indonesian natural ingredients, BOEMI promotes a “natural skin-food” concept handcrafted by local women. “We believe that caring for the skin should not harm the planet,” said BOEMI General Manager Ribka Anastasia.
