InfoSAWIT, SELANGOR – The transition to green energy in Malaysia's palm oil sector has entered a new phase with the launch of a pilot project for B30 biodiesel by SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie), in collaboration with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK), Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB), and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). The official launch of this project was graced by the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, on Carey Island, Selangor.
Through this initiative, all diesel machinery and vehicles owned by Guthrie on Carey Island will utilize B30 biodiesel—a fuel blend consisting of 30% palm oil-based biodiesel and 70% petroleum diesel. The use of B30 is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 23% per liter compared to conventional diesel. The biodiesel supply for this project will come from the PDB terminal in Melaka.
YB Datuk Seri Johari welcomed Guthrie's initiative, calling it a significant milestone in developing a more sustainable plantation sector. "The use of palm biodiesel not only supports the country's decarbonization agenda but also paves the way for the full implementation of the national B30 mandate in the future," he stated, as reported by InfoSAWIT from the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities on Sunday (July 20, 2025).
The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities also reaffirmed its commitment to fully support this project, which aligns with the National Biodiesel Program initiated in 2011. Overall, this pilot project is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 9,000 tons per year—equivalent to the emissions produced by more than 1,950 motor vehicles.
This initiative marks a significant achievement in the roadmap for green energy transition in Malaysia's palm oil industry, while also reinforcing the position of biodiesel as an environmentally friendly and competitive alternative fuel. (T2)
