Palm Oil Remains Strategic Commodity as State Takes Over 829 Hectares of Illegal Plantations

InfoSAWIT, PASANGKAYU – West Sulawesi Governor Suhardi Duka emphasized that the palm oil plantation sector remains one of Indonesia’s strategic commodities, both in terms of national economic contribution and its role in global commodity dynamics.

Speaking during a communal iftar event hosted by the Pasangkayu Regency Government, he noted that approximately 80% of the economic activity in Pasangkayu Regency is derived from the palm oil sector.

The governor also addressed enforcement measures in the plantation sector following findings by the Forest Area Enforcement Task Force (Satgas PKH), which identified company-owned oil palm plantations located within forest areas.

Around 829 hectares of oil palm plantations were reportedly taken over by the state after being indicated as operating within designated forest zones, as reported by Kalbarsulbar on Wednesday (Feb 25, 2026).

The move is considered part of the government’s effort to ensure legal compliance in the plantation industry while reinforcing regulatory oversight and sustainable governance practices. (T2)
