Topaz Oil Palm Seeds Surpass 200 Million Sales, Building Global Reputation Through Field Performance

JAKARTA, InfoSAWIT – More than two decades after receiving commercial approval, Topaz oil palm seeds have surpassed 200 million units sold, establishing one of the industry's widest global footprints and reinforcing their reputation among plantation companies and smallholders through consistent field performance rather than marketing claims.

Since its approval in 2004, the Topaz variety has been planted across a wide range of growing environments, allowing its productivity and reliability to be tested under diverse plantation conditions.

According to information presented by Asian Agri during IPOSC 2025 in West Kalimantan, the seed's growing acceptance has been driven largely by proven results in commercial plantations and smallholder estates, where successful harvests often translate into wider adoption through peer recommendations.

One notable example is KUD Petapahan Maju Bersama, a smallholder cooperative that won the GAPKI Productivity Competition Award in both 2018 and 2019 after planting Topaz seeds. The cooperative received its 2018 award directly from then-President Joko Widodo during the 14th Indonesian Palm Oil Conference (IPOC) in Bali.

For growers, seed quality remains one of the most critical investment decisions, as poor planting material can affect plantation productivity for decades.

To strengthen customer confidence, Asian Agri said Topaz seeds undergo Shell Genotyping Tests using Orion Shell genotyping technology for both Dura and Pisifera parent palms. The production system is also certified under ISO 9001:2015 and supervised by the Riau Provincial Plantation Seed Monitoring and Certification Unit, including certification for Topaz Superior DxP seeds.

"Growers' trust is built on consistent quality. That is why quality control and certification remain our top priorities," the company said in its presentation, as cited by InfoSAWIT.

While superior genetics cannot eliminate challenges such as volatile palm oil prices, labour shortages, or climate risks, reliable planting materials can significantly improve the probability of achieving sustainable long-term productivity, making seed quality a key pillar of plantation competitiveness.
