InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The World Trade Organization (WTO) panel has officially ruled in favor of Indonesia in a trade dispute with the European Union (EU) regarding the imposition of countervailing duties on biodiesel imports. This ruling strengthens Indonesia's position in fighting for fair market access for its national products, particularly palm oil-based biodiesel.
The dispute originated in 2023 when the European Union imposed additional duties on biodiesel from Indonesia, a policy that was deemed inconsistent with WTO rules. In its decision, the WTO panel recommended that the EU align its policy with the provisions of the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement).
“This is good news because the WTO Panel has supported Indonesia regarding the imposition of a dumping duty on biodiesel in Europe. With this decision, the European Union will of course need to revoke the duties it has imposed. Now, we are just waiting for the European Union's response,” said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, in an official statement quoted by InfoSAWIT on Tuesday (26/8/2025).
Airlangga affirmed that the government will prepare strategic and measured steps to follow up on the decision. He also noted that this victory will be an important catalyst for the development of Indonesia's key export commodities, including palm oil and biodiesel. Furthermore, the government is committed to continuing to oversee the implementation of the WTO decision with a solution-oriented and collaborative approach. “Indonesia will continue to fight for its national interests while promoting a fairer global trade,” Airlangga asserted.
