Youth as the Pillars of Sustainability in the Palm Oil Industry

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The Chairman of the Plantation Human Capital Association (PHCA), Sulung R aspati, highlighted the crucial role of the younger generation in addressing global challenges in the palm oil industry. Given that palm oil is a strategic commodity with significant contributions to the country's foreign exchange, he emphasized the importance of youth involvement.

“In 2023, palm oil generated foreign exchange of up to IDR 600 trillion, approximately 22-23 billion USD. This underscores the importance of this industry to the national economy,” Sulung stated during the opening of the webinar themed “Palm Oil in the View of Millennials and Gen Z: Addressing Sustainability Issues and Career Opportunities,” attended by InfoSAWIT on Saturday (December 14, 2024).

However, he also pointed out that global challenges such as climate change and market competition require serious attention. Sulung mentioned the potential of millennials and Gen Z as agents of change amid these challenges. “The younger generation, with their broad access to information and high adaptability, has extraordinary potential to lead the palm oil industry towards greater sustainability. With proper education and understanding, they can support sustainable practices that protect the environment,” he explained.

The event also discussed career opportunities in the palm oil industry, the perceptions of the younger generation regarding sustainability issues, and the challenges faced. Additionally, the role of technology in enhancing productivity and sustainability was a key agenda item for discussion. “Through collaborative efforts, we can provide significant economic benefits to the community while also maintaining environmental sustainability,” Sulung added.

PHCA encourages all stakeholders, especially the younger generation, to be more actively involved in the sustainable palm oil industry. “Through this collaboration, we aim not only to create economic benefits but also to maintain environmental balance for future generations,” Sulung concluded.

With increasingly complex challenges, this event serves as a momentum to strengthen understanding of the importance of youth engagement in the palm oil industry. The combination of technological innovation, education, and a commitment to sustainability is key to maintaining Indonesia's position as the world's largest palm oil producer. (T2)
