InfoSAWIT, BANGKA BELITUNG – The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) has expressed deep concern over the confinement of a mother and her child on a palm oil plantation in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Province, a case implicating two company executives as suspects.
Eddy Martono, Chairman of GAPKI, voiced regret over the incident, even though the company involved is not a GAPKI member. “We hope the mother and child are now safe, healthy, and reunited with their family in comfort,” Eddy stated in a press release received by InfoSAWIT on Wednesday (11/12/2024).
Eddy emphasized GAPKI’s commitment to adhering to Indonesia’s laws and regulations, with its 752 member companies committed to upholding human rights principles both within and outside work relations. “We believe all GAPKI members operate their businesses in compliance with the law while maintaining the highest regard for human rights,” he added.
GAPKI also reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible business practices in the palm oil sector, including fostering positive relationships with workers and surrounding communities.
This incident highlights the importance of strict oversight and enforcement of laws within the palm oil industry to ensure the protection of human rights. GAPKI pledged to cooperate with authorities in supporting fair and sustainable industry practices.
