MPOB: 70 Percent Independent Smallholders in Malaysia

InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) successfully mapped about 70 percent independent smallholders in the country. It was part of the project to map palm oil plantations in Malaysia. The data can be seen through GeoPALM MPOB portal that covered 85 percent organized smallholders and 88 percent plantations in Semenanjung, Malaysia.

General Director of MPOB, Datuk Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir said that the project was conducted by taking advantages on remote sense technology and geographic information system (GIS). The technology enabled MPOB to monitor every palm oil plantation nationally and would deliver valuable insight/information for the industries.

“The mapping project was also in cooperation with Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and covered most of the region in the country with the update for Sabah. It is hoped to be accomplished by the late of this year,” Ahmad Parveez said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from Bernama, Thursday (19/9/2024).

To quaify the regulation – European Union Deforestation Regulation, MPOB also develop geolocation dta and polygon maps for licensed smallholders. This would be the main condition to get market access in the continent.

The project also collaborated with geospatial data institutions, such as, Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM), Jabatan Tanah dan Ukur Sabah (JTU), dan Jabatan Tanah dan Survei Sarawak (LANDAS) to confirm data accuracy and the polygon maps.

GeoPALM portal of MPOB was presented in many international scale forums, including Roundtable for Smallholder Inclusion for EUDR Requirements and the 1st Focus Group Discussion on EUDR Compliance.

Ahmad Parveez also said that this was positively responded by many stakeholders and smallholders. “MPOB really appreciated the sustainable supports from the parties, and would deliver further update available,” he said.

MPOB led palm oil plantation maps with Kebijakan Agrikomoditi Nasional (DAKN 2030). The main goals would be about to restric palm oil plantations nationally up to 6,5 million hectares, ban new plantings, reinforce regulations about palm oil plantations in peat, and restrict permanent reserved forest (PRF) conversion for agricultural activities.
