InfoSAWIT, ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s soybean imports from the United States have surpassed 1 million metric tonnes annually, highlighting the growing strategic importance of agricultural commodities in strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
The development was discussed during a meeting between Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, and US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) Chief Executive Officer Jim Sutter on the sidelines of the US Soy Connext conference in Chicago.
According to Business Recorder, as reported by InfoSAWIT on Tuesday, August 11, Sheikh welcomed the growing momentum in economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, particularly in trade and investment. He emphasized the important role agricultural trade can play in deepening bilateral economic relations.
Sheikh said Pakistan had rapidly emerged as one of the major markets for US soybeans. Annual imports exceeding 1 million metric tonnes reflect rising domestic demand while also creating opportunities for broader commercial cooperation between businesses in both countries.
Opportunities Across the Soybean Value Chain
The growing soybean trade presents opportunities beyond the direct movement of commodities between exporters and importers.
Sheikh highlighted several areas with potential for further cooperation, including increased trade, stronger business-to-business relationships, technical collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Expanding cooperation across these areas could benefit businesses in both countries while strengthening agriculture’s contribution to their broader economic relationship.
Sutter, meanwhile, highlighted the long-standing partnership between USSEC and stakeholders in Pakistan. He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to expanding cooperation with industry players and other stakeholders in the country.
USSEC has implemented a range of initiatives in Pakistan, including technical assistance, capacity building, industry training and nutrition education programs.
These initiatives are designed to support the sustainable development of industries closely linked to soybeans, particularly livestock feed, poultry, dairy and food processing.
Soybeans Strengthen Pakistan-US Economic Ties
The continued growth in US soybean exports to Pakistan underscores the increasingly strategic role of agricultural commodities in bilateral trade.
With Pakistan’s domestic demand continuing to develop, deeper cooperation in the soybean sector could create new opportunities not only for commodity trade but also for technology transfer, industry development and human-resource capacity building.
The two sides agreed to maintain close communication and explore opportunities to expand cooperation in the soybean sector as part of their broader economic relationship.
