InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – While corporations are still preparing, independent smallholders have moved ahead. The RSPO Independent Smallholder Standard (RISS) 2024 officially came into effect this year, placing smallholders at the forefront of implementing strengthened sustainability requirements.

In a misty morning deep in Kalimantan, the rhythmic sound of machetes cutting oil palm fronds signals another routine day in the fields. Yet beneath the ordinary routine, a quiet transformation is underway. Independent smallholders are now leading the implementation of new sustainability standards.

Ironically, while smallholders advance, large corporations have been granted additional time. The mandatory implementation of the RSPO 2024 Principles and Criteria (P&C) for companies has been postponed until May 31, 2026. The decision was adopted during the 22nd RSPO General Assembly (GA22) in November 2025, with majority member support.

Meanwhile, the RISS 2024—endorsed in November 2024—became effective on November 13, 2025, without a grace period or further revision.

“This proves that independent smallholders are more ready for stronger and more credible standards,” said Rukaiyah Rafik, Head of Secretariat at the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Farmers Forum (Fortasbi), in a recent interview with InfoSAWIT.

As corporations continue adjusting internal systems and awaiting training, smallholders have already stepped forward—without delay. (*)
