InfoSAWIT, ACEH – Musim Mas reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable palm oil by extending its strategic partnership with Nestlé and AAK, marking the fourth year of the Smallholders Hub program. Launched in 2021, the landscape-based initiative focuses on empowering independent smallholders and training Field Facilitators (PPL) in sustainable farming and NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation) principles.
Initially funded by Nestlé and AAK for the first two years, the program aimed to address deforestation outside concession areas, particularly in Aceh Subulussalam. Over time, its scope expanded to include farmers’ social and economic challenges.
By mid-2025, 1,581 smallholders and 117 PPL had been trained—surpassing initial targets. Of those, 20 top PPL received advanced training toward ISPO certification and household composting as a chemical fertilizer alternative.
With the extension, Musim Mas targets 500 more smallholders and 20 new PPL for training. The program will also engage women, youth, and provide financial literacy to support farmers ahead of palm replanting.
“This collaboration highlights the importance of long-term commitment and direct involvement in creating positive impact,” said Olivier Tichit, Director of Communications and Sustainability at Musim Mas, on Tuesday (29 July 2025). He stressed that involving women and youth is vital for the industry's inclusive and responsible future.
Women will receive training in nutrition and business management, while men are encouraged to support women’s empowerment. Youth will be introduced to modern, tech-based sustainable agriculture through tailored learning platforms.
Caroline Westerik-Sikking, AAK’s Sustainability Director, noted that the partnership also aims to prepare smallholders for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
“Smallholders face resource and knowledge constraints. Such partnerships are essential to ensure their inclusive and sustainable participation in global supply chains,” she said.
Musim Mas, Nestlé, and AAK remain committed to strengthening smallholders’ capacity to address future industry challenges and foster a fair, inclusive, and sustainable palm oil ecosystem.
