Welcoming the Era of Smart Plantations Through Digital Transformation

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The palm oil industry is entering a new chapter. IoT, AI, ERP systems, and blockchain are now connecting plantations, mills, and supply chains—creating levels of efficiency, transparency, and productivity never seen before.

Amid global competition and market demands for greater efficiency, Indonesia’s palm oil sector is stepping into the era of Palm Oil 4.0. Technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and cloud computing are reshaping operations from plantations to mills and distribution networks.

Eko Widodo of the Indonesia Digital Transformation Institute (ITDI), a NUIJI partner, stressed that digitalization is no longer optional but an urgent need. “Digital transformation enables every process in palm oil plantations to run more efficiently, transparently, and measurably,” he said in a webinar attended by InfoSAWIT in mid-June 2025.

IoT technology now supports precision agriculture by monitoring soil moisture, weather, and plant health in real time. Field sensors send data directly to control centers, enabling swift and accurate decision-making.

Automation and drone use add a new dimension to plantation management. Drones no longer serve merely for mapping but are used for planting, spraying, and harvest monitoring. In supply chain management, IoT optimizes logistics, reduces post-harvest losses, and eases traceability from plantation to consumer.

Blockchain ensures transparent and secure transactions, while data analytics help forecast fertilizer needs and determine optimal harvesting schedules.

Integrated digital transformation case studies, such as Smart Plantation Monitoring (PMMP), have recorded yield increases of up to 26% in a year, improved oil extraction rates (OER), and an impressive return on investment (ROI) of 728%. Soil and weather sensors have reduced field trips, cutting input and labor costs.

Meanwhile, AI and remote sensing detect plant conditions with up to 91% accuracy, supporting better resource allocation. Despite requiring infrastructure investment, 5G and LoRa networks promise even greater productivity.

Digitalization also transforms palm oil mills. IoT-based predictive maintenance and SCADA systems have boosted annual output by up to 28%, while improving workplace safety and energy efficiency. (*)
