InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA — Amid changes in global sustainability requirements, Indonesia’s independent smallholders are demonstrating strong readiness for improvement. While RSPO’s Principles & Criteria (P&C) for companies have been postponed until 31 May 2026, the smallholder-specific ISH Standard 2024 is moving ahead without delay.

Rukaiyah Rafiq, Head of the Fortasbi Secretariat, said smallholders’ preparedness is a positive sign. “This proves that independent smallholders are more ready to implement stronger and more credible standards,” she told InfoSAWIT (26 November 2025).

The new ISH 2024 standard—approved in November 2025—offers a more pragmatic approach than previous regulations. Requirements are more concise, instructions clearer, and group manager roles strengthened.

RSPO has also integrated the standard with support mechanisms such as STA, RSSF, and RSEP.

Corporate Standard Delayed

At the RSPO General Assembly (GA22) on 5 November 2025, members voted 58.94% in favor of delaying mandatory enforcement of the P&C 2024 standard by six months.

P&C RSPO 2024 will only be auditable starting 14 May 2026, using a revised certification system. Until then, companies will continue referring to the 2018 P&C standard.

Smallholders Move Ahead

In contrast, the ISH Standard 2024 became effective on 13 November 2025, signaling smallholders’ readiness to adopt the new system early.

Smallholders are no longer mere beneficiaries but essential actors capable of meeting global standards. The new system strengthens their access to premium markets and supports long-term sustainability in the palm oil industry. (T1)
