InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR — Concerns are rising in major palm oil-producing regions as fresh fruit bunches (FFB) suffer increasing damage from squirrel attacks. According to information cited from Green Project on Sunday (23/11/2025), the small mammals—often overlooked due to their size—are emerging as one of the most persistent pests in palm plantations.

Squirrels typically target near-ripe fruit, peeling off the outer layer to reach the kernel inside. Although the damage may appear minor, the impact is significant: once peeled, the fruit can no longer be processed, resulting in immediate yield loss for growers.

Estate workers report that abundant food sources and shaded nesting areas contribute to rapid population growth if left unmanaged.

Signs of squirrel presence include neatly peeled fruit on the ground, scattered kernels, and rustling sounds from palm fronds—indicating feeding or nesting activity.

Experts highlight the importance of balanced pest control measures. Habitat management, trapping, and reducing food availability are among the recommended strategies to keep populations in check without disrupting ecosystem stability.
