LSM Duta Sampit Urges Transparency and Justice in PT Unggul Lestari's NKT–SKT Assessment

InfoSAWIT, SAMPIT — The commitment to sustainable palm oil management continues to be strengthened through open dialogue between companies, communities, and local institutions. One such example was evident in the Final Consultation on the Assessment of High Conservation Value (NKT), High Carbon Stock (SKT), SIA, FPIC, LTUS, and Participatory Mapping (PM) organized by PT Sonokeling Akreditas Nusantara together with PT Unggul Lestari (UL) at the Meeting Room Pondok Jelawat Resto, Sampit, Kotawaringin Timur Regency, Central Kalimantan, Friday (24/10/2025).

In the forum, Chairman of LSM Duta Sampit, Yunan Nasution, AMH, conveyed several constructive inputs to ensure that the assessment process and partnership plan run in accordance with the principles of transparency, participation, and sustainability. “We want to ensure that the studies and partnerships truly benefit the community and the environment. The principle of openness must be upheld from the assessment stage to implementation on the ground,” said Yunan in a statement received by InfoSAWIT, Monday (3/11/2025).

Three Main Inputs LSM Duta Sampit highlighted three important points in the implementation of NKT–SKT studies and company partnership plans. First, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in study results. The NKT–SKT assessment process must follow scientifically valid procedures and transparent governance so that the results can be publicly accountable.

Second, rejecting overlaps with community land. Yunan requested that areas designated as NKT zones not include community-owned gardens that refuse to have their land designated as conservation areas. “Land already managed by the community and not agreed upon as part of the NKT should be excluded from the conservation zone map,” he emphasized.

Third, ready to accompany and oversee the partnership. LSM Duta Sampit stated its commitment to accompany the implementation of the partnership and monitor the application of social (SIA) and environmental (NKT–SKT) study results so that they align with sustainability principles. In addition, Yunan also appreciated PT Unggul Lestari's efforts to build partnerships with communities in Antang Kalang District.

According to him, the company's steps show real commitment to improving local economic welfare. “A well-managed partnership not only benefits the company but also provides direct benefits to the surrounding community,” he added.

Urge Participatory and Fair Principles Through this forum, LSM Duta Sampit hopes that all assessment and partnership implementation processes in PT Unggul Lestari's operational area can be carried out with participatory, transparent, and fair principles for all parties, especially local communities.

LSM Duta Sampit also affirms its readiness to continue playing an active role in oversight and accompaniment so that the partnerships implemented are truly based on sustainable palm oil principles and social justice. “We will continue to oversee that every commitment outlined in these study results is truly implemented on the ground,” Yunan concluded.
