InfoSAWIT, BUENOS AIRES — After being drenched by repeated rains in recent weeks, Argentine farmers are finally seeing hope for catching up on soybean harvests. The country's two main exchanges, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BdeC) and the Rosario Exchange (BCR), predict that dry and cold weather will dominate in the coming days, providing an opportunity to accelerate the delayed harvest.
Argentina is the world's largest exporter of soybean oil and meal. However, the 2024/25 planting season faces significant challenges due to heavy rainfall in key production areas. The government estimates total soybean production this year to reach 49 million metric tons, but concerns about declining yields remain due to delayed harvesting.
In its weekly agro-climatic report, BdeC stated that most agricultural areas in Argentina are expected to receive minimal rainfall, less than 10 millimeters. This weather is considered ideal for drying out fields and soybean crops that have been waterlogged.
"The incoming cold air will lower temperatures, even allowing for frost in some production areas," said Cristian Russo, Head of Agricultural Estimates at the Rosario Exchange, as reported by InfoSAWIT from Reuters on Friday (May 30, 2025). "Despite the cold, these conditions could actually help with drying and improve harvesting conditions."
According to the latest BdeC report, harvesting in northern Buenos Aires Province is lagging behind by 9 to 20 percentage points compared to last year. Nationally, only about 74.3% of the total soybean area had been harvested as of last week.
With reduced rainfall and increasingly favorable weather conditions, analysts hope that the harvesting process can be expedited. This is crucial not only for maintaining national production volumes but also for ensuring a stable supply of Argentine soybeans to export markets.
If the weather remains favorable, Argentina has the potential to maintain its position as a key player in the global soybean market, alleviating concerns for exporters and international buyers. (T2)
