New Opportunities Ahead: Palm Acid Oil Gains Traction in European Markets

InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR — Palm Acid Oil (PAO) is increasingly establishing itself as a strategic commodity within the global industrial supply chain. Once known primarily as a raw material for laundry soap and calcium soaps in animal feed, this by-product of the alkali refining of palm oil has evolved into a versatile feedstock used across various key sectors.

PAO is a distilled fatty acid fraction derived from palm oil mill effluent (POME) and chemically refined palm oil. With a free fatty acid (FFA) content exceeding 50%, good neutral oil yield, and moisture levels of just 2–3%, PAO is considered highly suitable for biodiesel production, animal feed, and soap and detergent manufacturing. Although its FFA content is slightly lower than PFAD, its similar chemical characteristics make it a flexible and cost-effective option for both oleochemical and renewable energy industries.

Citing an analysis by Hajar Shamsudin of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), the global PAO market is projected to reach US$820 million in 2025, with an average growth rate of 8.5% per year, reaching an estimated US$1.72 billion by 2034. This growth is primarily driven by rising biodiesel demand amid increasing biofuel mandates and international commitments to low-carbon energy.

Beyond its use as a renewable fuel, PAO is also gaining traction in the oleochemical and animal feed sectors. Growing consumption of soaps, detergents, animal nutrition products, and chemical intermediates continues to strengthen PAO’s role as a future-proof commodity.

Some examples of downstream applications include:

Biodiesel — Its high FFA content makes PAO ideal for transesterification processes. Demand is especially strong in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the European Union. Sweden is among the countries aggressively pursuing green energy agendas supported by PAO.

Oleochemicals — Used in the production of fatty acids, esters, and glycerin, which are essential components for lubricants, surfactants, and cosmetics.

Soaps and Detergents — Its lauric and palmitic acid content enhances hardness and cleaning performance, making it a preferred ingredient in industrial-scale formulations. (T2)
