GAR Conserves about 72 thousand Hectares

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA -As the company running its business since 1999, Golen Agri-Resources (GAR) Ltd, becomes the biggest palm oil plantation company operating in Indonesia. By the end of 2016, GAR cultivated 488 thousand hectares of palm oil plantation within 169 areas or about 4% of the total palm oil areas in Indonesia. The areas cultivated by the plasma smallholders reached 21% of the total areas of the company or reached about 102.255 hectares.

Until now GAR has 45 palm oil factories (POF) or supplies about 45% of the production needs to the company. The rests are taken from the third sides or about 429 suppliers whole over Indonesia.

To produce sustainable products, the company agreed to implement four commitments to get the goal. It is famously known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), they are environment management; social and participation of the people’ sustainable labor practice’ and market and chain of stock. “The commitments derive from the top management of the company,” Managing Director of Sustainability and Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, GAR, Agus Purnomo recently said in Jakarta.

The first commitment is environment management. GAR adopts ‘Forest Conservation Policy’ since January 2011. This regulates the company not to develop the areas having High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS).The company does not enlarge in peat and conservation, no matter how deep it is. The company conserves and protects the rare animals.

According to the company, GAR has conserved 72 thousand hectares or nearly as wide as Singapore that may have HCV or reaching 53.248 hectares and HCS reaching 18.846 hectares.

The areas that may have HCV and HCS should be well maintained by making incentive consultation with the people around. It started from the making of participative mapping to ensure that the people’s areas are protected too.(T2)
