InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - Minister of Environment and Forestry Indonesia, Siti Nurbaya said that for the past nine years or since 2015, Indonesia always commits to reduce green – house gas (GHG) emission and delivers obligatory documents to secretariat of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), such as, Third National Communication; 2nd and 3rd Biennial Update Report; First Nationally Determined Contribution (1st NDC); Updated NDC; and Long Term Long Term Strategy Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050. She also told that the negotiation result in Glasgow in 2021, many countries were urged to reinforce the target of NDC 2030 by the late of 2022.
“On 23 September 2022, Indonesia delivered Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution or ENDC to the UNFCCC Secretariat by improving GHG emission reduction from 29% to be 31,89% with the national power and from 41% to be 43,20% with the international support in 2030,” Minister Siti said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Tuesday (8/8/2023).
Indonesia, thought delivered GHG emission reduction that escalated through ENDC but by scientific exclamation and other consideration, has also arranged Second National Determined Contribution (SNDC) that would be equal with Long Term Strategy Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050 with the climate vision of Indonesia to realize net-zero emission in 2060 or sooner. It is hoped Indonesia could deliver the submission of SNDC to UNFCCC in 2024.
“I have to emphasized that ENDC that we are developing in our orientation heading to the decreasing temperature - 1,5 °C, with detailed exercise, we would get Number - 43,2 %, CM 2 condition in 2030. The numbers could be the same with USA target which is, 43%. Data GHG emission reduction in Indonesia in IGRK record decreased 47,28% in 2020 and 43,82% in 2021. The 2022 forecast could be better with the fire in the forest and area – indication that dealt better in 2022,” she said.
Ministry of Environment and Forestry noted that the successful 2020 GHG emission reduction was clearly deriving from forestry and other land uses (FOLU) that reached to be 182 million tons of CO2 equivalent emission, that was more than 900 million tons of CO2 equivalent emission in 2019. The government keeps working on it in energy sector after our business inn FOLU that we always keep managing. Energy sectors are doing the best to get GHG emission reduction with the strategies to realize net zero emission, such as, by electrification, moratorium with powerplants, developing new and renewable energy sources, and implementing energy efficiency.
