InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Public debate over the definition of “sawit” (oil palm) in Indonesia’s official dictionary (KBBI) has prompted clarification from language authorities and scientists.
Dewi Puspita, Executive Editor of the sixth edition of KBBI, stated that the term “tree” has been used in the oil palm definition since the fourth edition in 2008.
The dictionary defines oil palm as a tree resembling coconut, with branched flower clusters and oil-rich fruit, scientifically known as Elaeis guineensis.
Meanwhile, BRIN biosystematics researcher Deden Girmansyah explained that plant classification systems have evolved over centuries. Modern taxonomy relies on binomial nomenclature and hierarchical classification systems.
Joko Witono, also from BRIN, emphasized that taxonomy is dynamic. “Revisions are made to improve classification based on new scientific evidence. However, previous names are retained as synonyms,” he said.
Experts hope the clarification will encourage a more comprehensive understanding of oil palm from both linguistic and scientific perspectives. (T2)
