InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – India continues to play a pivotal role in Indonesia’s palm oil export strategy.
Wijayanto, Director of Agricultural and Forestry Product Exports at Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, stated that Indonesian exports to India have grown at an average annual rate of 5.6% over the past five years—significantly higher than the global import growth trend of approximately 2.5% during the same period.
In 2024, India became the world’s largest palm oil importer, with volumes reaching 8.6 million tons, representing around 20% of global imports under HS code 1511. Nearly half of that supply originated from Indonesia.
Wijayanto also noted strong growth in India’s downstream energy and palm-based derivative exports, which expanded by 14.5% between 2020 and 2024 to reach 4.5 million tons, with key destinations including the United Arab Emirates.
“Demand is rising not only for crude palm oil but also for biofuels, palm acid oil, palm oil mill effluent, bio-plastics, and fine chemicals. Much of the feedstock for these products comes from Indonesia,” he said.
India’s export markets have also expanded, with shipments to Saudi Arabia increasing by 59.4% over the past four years. (T2)
