16.500 Plasma Smallholders of Cargill Are Parts of Sustainability

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – 3.019 plasma smallholders from 8 (eight) unions joining palm oil plantations of PT Poliplant Sejahtera (PSA) in West Kalimantan, the subsidiary of Cargill got Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certificate recently.

It means that the total palm oil plantations of PSA getting RSPO certificate reach 10.026,58 hectares. This is the new history for them and reflects that they succeed to fulfill the sustainability that RSPO regulates.

Head of Koperasi Subur Makmur since 2016, Suherman said that being in partnership with Cargill, the plasma smallholders implement the sustainable practices. The harvests get increasing as same as the smallholders’ capability does to efficiently to work in the union.

“RSPO certificate reflects the big support for the sustainable agricultural practices and our partnership with Cargill. We are optimist that there would be increasing income from the fresh fruit bunch (FFB) harvest that passes the sustainable standards internationally,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT recently.

RSPO certificate given to 8 unions in partnership with PSA is the fifth one for Cargill. The previous four were given to PT. Hindoli (South Sumatera), PT. Harapan Sawit Lestari , and PT. Indo Sawit Kekal (West Kalimantan).

President Director of Cargill - Poliplant Group (PPG), Anthony Yeow said that the publication of RSPO certificate would give better chance for the smallholders to penetrate the larger market, that is, the global.

“We always support the partners of the palm oil chain of stock to join RSPO and to get the RSPO certificate so that theirs could fulfill the NDPE standards (no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation) as it is written in the commitment of Cargill in 2020,” he said.

Until now Cargill has developed about 16.500 of 21.600 plasma smallholders in South Sumatera and West Kalimantan to get RSPO certificate.

Acquired by Cargil in 2014, PSA is one of five palm oil plantations of PPG in West Kalimantan that got RSPO certificate in 2016, including the Siriham (factory) and 4.005 hectares of the company’s. The other plantations of Cargill in the same province, such as, PT Harapan Sawit Lestari and PT. Indo Sawit Kekal got the certificate in 2015 and 2014. PT Hindoli in South Sumatera was the first one of Cargill getting RSPO certificate in 2009. (T2)
