Palm Oil Markets in Algeria Keep Increasing: Here are the Numbers

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Fat and oil markets in Algeria are dominated by soyoil. Some reasons caused the increasing soyoil imports massively, such as, competitive price of local soyoil because it is free from incoming tax and income tax; the government also delivers palm oil subsidy from soyoil.

As the result, the dominant vegetable oil markets in Algeria are soyoil, crude palm oil (CPO) within about 20%. CPO is used as material to produce margarine (13%), biscuit and cheese 3% and vegetable oil (2,7%). Ghee oil is dominated by CPO and every product from ghee that reached 30.000 tons in Algeria is in palm oil -  based.

“Though it is difficult to penetrate vegetable oil markets which soyoil dominates as the consumers’ choice, there is still chance for palm olein (palm cooking oil) to get its part in palm oil industries,” Lamyaa El Enany of Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) noted.

Vegetable oil seeds in Algeria do not develop well because of the previous agricultural policy. Soyoil in Algeria significantly develops since 2019, and increased fast in 2020 and 2021 if compared to 2019. Soyoil is produced the most there within markets up to 69%, then olive oil that reached 28,9%.

Most of commercial vegetable oils are produced in the country from imported crude oil by two industries, they are, Enterprise National des Corps Gras (ENCG) and Cevital Group. But the domestic supply is not a hope. (*)
